Chris is a native of Tidewater, VA and he played high school baseball at Denbigh High School in Newport News, VA. While at Denbigh, he earned All Peninsula District honors as a catcher. Following high school, Chris moved on to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he played under legendary coach Tony Guzzo. While at VCU, he was also coached by current NC State Head Baseball Coach Elliot Avent and current Catching Coordinator for the Atlanta Braves Joe Breeden. In 1985, Chris transferred to Christopher Newport University to finish out his playing career. He was named team captain and earned All Conference Honorable Mention for the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference both his junior and senior seasons. Immediately upon his graduation, Chris was hired as an Assistant Baseball Coach at the College of William and Mary where he worked with catchers and outfielders and served as the team’s recruiting coordinator, team travel coordinator, and first base coach. In 1988, Chris was named Head Baseball Coach at the College of William and Mary. At the time, at the age of 24, it was an NCAA record as the youngest head coach ever at the Division 1 level. After only one season at W&M, Chris stepped away to follow in his father’s footsteps and serve our country as a Naval aviator. He spent 24 years on active duty, attaining the rank of Commander. He served aboard the USS Ranger, USS Nimitz, and the USS Harry Truman as well as a number of bases in the US and abroad. He served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Allied Force (in which he flew 28 combat missions over Serbia and Kosovo), Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. His final assignment was to staff the Naval War College in Newport, RI. Upon his retirement, he was hired as faculty at the Naval War College. Since retirement, he has served as an Assistant Coach in both the R&R Construction Post 18 American Legion Baseball Program in Newport RI and in the Hathaway Post 228 American Legion Baseball Program in Somerset MA. He has also served as a Head Coach and as an Assistant Coach in the Newport Junior Gulls Baseball Program in 2014 and 2015.
